1986 4runner MPG?

Hey all..

I have a 1986 4runner with a 22re, 32's and it has 207K on it. I am getting
about 16.5 MPG on it. Does this sound about right?

i have an '88 4runner with a reman 22re, 5-speed, stock gears, 31" equivalent, intake, headers and 2.5" exhaust and i get anywhere between 18 and 20 mpgs.

wow... i have an 87 22re with 31's and stock gears and im getting 26??? i was kinda thinking that was high for a 4x4 that old but its a 4 banger so i didnt think to hard.
 
I'm having a problem with the headlights and cluster lights. When I turn the headlight swith to the first notch, I have headlights but no tail lights or cluster lights. When I turn the headlight switch to the second notch (full on) I have no headlights, tail lights or cluster lights. I have switched out the headlight relay under the hood and it didn't help.

that's awesome!

i'm about 60/40 city/highway and have some good hills.

also, i tend to cruise at 70mph as i'm in southern california... and i like to hear my intake and exhaust :reddance:

i'm sure if i toned it down a bit i could add a few more MPGs.

the '88 4runner is not my DD so i tend to "drive" it a bit.

o shiznats... how do you get 60/40? O.o my 92 only gets like 20- depending on how I am driving, I need a better mpg, tell me your secrets Thurlo & Javen!
 
i dont do anything special. i got my 4runner and just did a simple tune up, new plugs, wires, distributer, timing chain, and cleaned everything out. got a bottle of sea foam and ran through the tank then changed the oil and fuel filter. got new tires and have them totally full of air. i try not to take it over 2500 rpm just cuz i pay for my own gas"im still in high school with a part time job...me=broke" but sometimes i hot rod it, just to shake things out. dont really do anything special. i dont think this is the origanal motor that came with the truck. whatever it is im happy with it!
 
There is absolutely no way that anyone is getting 60 or even 40 miles per gallon on a 4Runner with a gasoline engine.

Realistically the 22RE should do 16-25 depending on condition, gears and tires.

I think the 60/40 is 60% city driving, 40% highway driving. Not MPG.
I could be wrong though.

I am getting around 15 mpg on mine. Stock gearing, 32"s, but since the engine is tired,( 223,000 miles ) I kinda put my foot heavy into the throttle to get it to move out of it's own way :roadkill:

Now that I have changed all the vac. lines, and kinda got the idle back down, my MGP should go up some, I hope :)

That's not bad. With 207K the engine is worn, and the 32" tires have it running out of the the optimum range (unless you regeared the diffs).

Have you taken odometer error due to the larger tires into account when calculating you mpg's?
 
I have not accounted for difference in odometer readings because of the larger tires. How do you figure it....is there a formula?

I get 22 to 24 MPG with my 1988 22RE 5 speed
I have 31" tires and a 4.10 gear ratio, about 145k miles. I have a K&N filter and a header. The truck is my DD and sees 60/40 town and highway driving.

60% city and 40% highway :)

i tend to shift between 3k and 3.5k.

also, i keep the psi in the tires at about 34 or so.

This has been my question as well. I have a 1986 w/ a 22re & 5spd on 31's. Not accounting for the oversized wheels (odometer error) I am getting a little over 15mpg. So, I'm guessing actual mileage is around 17 or 18. Not great. Truck is showing 366XXX miles but PO said the engine was changed & has 180xxx on it. I think I should be getting better mileage. I want to get closer to 20. I do probably 75/25 highway/city (commute is 100miles round trip but I do it over 3 days because I work 2 back to back 24 hour shifts & then come home the third day).
 
Wow im getting around 12-13 in my 91 v6 5 speed with 31s and i do around 80% highway driving and also drive 55 and do every other mpg trick iv ever heard of, im pretty sure i have a bad EGR though, could that be why i am getting such bad mileage?

The 3.0's are notorious for horrible mpg's and not much more power than a 4 cyl.

Even so, the V6 should still get better mileage than you're getting. I don't even get that bad of mileage around town.
 
On my old 85' carb'd 4x4 pickup with 33's I would get around 18. That was with a 3" lift and stoc gears. Mostly highway.
