1987 4Runner transfer case fluid?

I am replacing the rear seal on my 1987 4Runner's xfer case and I will likely replace the fluid in the process. Since it has been leaking I'm pretty sure that it has 80-90 gear oil in it (or something similar), but when I checked the parts store I learned that Toyota recommends using automatic transmission fluid. A bit of looking online turns up several articles and forum posts that indicate that some people use ATF while others use various forms of gear oil. So what is the best fluid to put in my transfer case? Does anyone have any reason why one is better the others?

Thanks

If you have a manual trans the t-case uses gear oil (75W90)
If it's an auto trans it uses ATF (Dexron II)
