I just bought and 87 4runner with a 22re. runs fine. although, before it warms up completely, there is a small ticking sound. I changed the oil and checked the plugs and wires and they seemed ok. after its warmed the ticking goes away.

could it be a valve tap? is there anything specific i should look at or rebuild?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance

If it goes away after its warm I would assume it's the valves. It wouldn't be a bad idea to double check your valve lash just to make sure thay they haven't loosened up over the years.

sounds like maybe a lube issue. maybe the oil used is too heavy for your temps in Winter?
You could check the valves as it is simple to do and good insurance if it is new to you, they would not quiet when warm though.
Describe or investigate where the noise is coming from before you get a bunch of guesses from us though. Bottom of block, at the valve cover, at the oil pump, h2o pump, timing chain. YOu get the idea, we would need a bit more than "tapping" to hone in on what you may have going on better.
good luck and enjoy the new ride :) keep us updated on what you find.

btw, the 22r tends to have a little tick at all times for some and it would not be huge in my mind if i heard one
