Hello everyone...
New member here still figuring out how to navigate the site to get the most out of all the treasure chest of ideas, information, as well as the excellent diagnostic & repair information the members have shared... Thanks for welcoming me into your group!
I been having a problem with my recently bought 2005 T4R SR5 2wd w/ 4.0L V6 that has me pretty stumped!
I'll try to keep the background as short & thorough as possible...
I picked it up from a friend who's mechanic told him it had a blown head gasket & they didn't want to deal with the time & expense of fixing it so i got it for scrap price. After taking a look at it I didn't think it was the head gasket & after getting it home it turned out it just needed a good cleaning & a set of new spark plugs & it ran great but had the Chk engine, ABS/ TCS, & TPMS lights on & 3 error codes that I planned to work on as i drove it over the next few weeks (P2238, P2241 o2/ AFR sensor 1 bank 1 & 2 positive current cntrl circuit low & I don't recall the last code but i think it was for an evap purge valve?) I inspected & cleaned up the connections for those & any others within reach cleared the codes & decided to take a few drives of 100 to 150mi to see if that did it or if it needed a few drive cycles to clear & i did this after traffic died so i could keep an eye on all the gauges (i wasn't sure if the temp was working correct or not?) & confirm it was good to go anywhere... All was good for 2 of those drives but still had same lights & the 2 AFR sensor codes (evap code was gone) Then on the 3rd drive all seemed good until the second i exited the frwy, stepped on the gas & got nothing... & as it rolled to a stop I noticed a lil steam coming from under the hood & the gauge now read hot (I had been watching them all & literally checked it as i approached my offramp & it was middle of the range just 60 to 90seconds earlier as it had always been?) I let it cool back down for about 30mins & opened the radiator cap to add coolant so i could drive it the 3 or 4mi to a friends place & it hadn't really lost much coolant (1 liter or less really) & the overflow res was still over half full? topped it off & went to fire it up & go but wouldn't fire & sounded like it had little to no compression! My thoughts at the time was temp gauge had an issue & now the head gasket is blown!
Ok almost there... Got it home & read the error codes first thing & THIS IS WHAT HAS ME STUMPED... had P0328, P0333 both knock sensors But has anyone ever seen a P3000 Manufacturer specific powertrain code or P0034 turbo/ super charger byps vlv cntrl circuit low on their 4runner? I don't have a turbo or S/C & best i can find the P3000 is for electric or hybrid cars?
Then a compression check confirmed a blown head gasket (I THOUGHT!) but after pulling it apart it turned out to be a dropped valve seat in #4 intake! But I went ahead & basically rebuilt/ reconditioned the motor Cleaned out all the build up throughout the heads, the oil & coolant passages in the block, new timing set, pumps, new coolant temp & knock sensors, Gaskets, fluids & got it all back together fired it up & ran great then got a lil rough so i read the codes again & now its throwing 5 codes the same 2 o2/ AFR sensors, the 2 knock sensors, & a new C1201 code?
plus now my gas gauge goes from the half tank i know it has down to empty w/ reserve light on back to the right reading & repeats as i drive & it seems the temp is possibly doing it to but not at same time? Any body had any of these experiences?
