1988 $1,500
I paid $1,500 for a 1988 4Runner with 110,000 miles. The PO said he purchased it when it had 55,000 miles on it. The guy I bought it from was a smoker and didn't take the best care of the engine. It either had a blown head gasket or the other usual suspect, timing cover. Either way, the dipstick showed mocha... Took a chance on a used 22RE for about $600 plus spent another $1,600 for installation. Labor isn't cheap in Calif! I'm fine with the money I have in it. I've wanted one of these for the longest time and I finally have a 1st gen!
I got lucky on the used engine other wise I'm sure I'd regret not dumping another $600 or so for a rebuilt engine.
There is a dent on the front driver's side fender, a ding in the tailgate and a ding in the rear bumper on the driver's side.
It doesn't look near as clean as the one listing for $13k but I know it would take me far less than $9k balance to get it looking as nice. Sometimes I wished I had waited for a manual transmission 4Runner to come my way but all in all I'm happy with my purchase.
As for spending $13,000 on a 1st Gen, to each his own. My only regret is not paying $5200 for an '87 SR5, 22RE manual transmission that had 95k on it... and had been garaged most if not all of it's life. I missed that opportunity but there's always another one around the corner.
