1988 Toyota 4x4 p/u OEM wheel ????

What year OEM wheels will fit on my 1988 4x4 truck. I have the steelies on it now, but there are horribly rusted and I want to replace them w/some OEM alloys.

The first set of steelies (spoked) didn't fit over my hubs. The wheel's centers were segmented and my hubs are perfectly round.

Some I grabbed a set of alloys (ebay)

and now I need some shanked lugs. I don't know what years/model lugs would fit these and my truck?

I had a similar problem and came up with the same solution. The 7-spoke steel wheels that came on my used '92 4R were not rusted, but they looked terrible. It appeared that the previous owner got stuck in gravel and spun the wheels a LOT. Two of the four had almost all the top layer of paint worn off.

I picked up a reconditioned set just like the ones in your pic from AA Rims. I had to get 5 wheels, due to the fact that the spare that accompanies the 7-spoke wheels is only 6 inches wide. I wanted to use bigger tires all around. The 6-incher wouldnt hold the bigger tire

Now about the lugs -- as far as I know, there are 2 styles of lugs to fit your wheels. There is a 'long' style and a 'short' style. However, both styles are made exactly the same where the lug meets the wheel and holds it on. There is a small, flange on the lugs that fits into the flat, machined surface on the wheel. I ended up just getting new ones from the Toyota Dealership. They are a little pricey, but I wanted to be sure I got the ones that fit. I'm not sure about the year models, but these style wheels and lugs were in use for several years. In fact, I think my 2002 Solara has the exact same style lug. ( But I haven't 'really' checked it )

If you haven't priced the plastic wheel centers for your new alloys, you will be in for a huge shock! From the dealer they are about $50 (yes, FIFTY ) apiece. We are talkin' pieces of PLASTIC here. Try to find some at a salvage yard if possible. I had no luck, since there aren't too many 4R's in the junk yard around here. You 'may' be able to find the lugs there, too.

I kinda figured about the flanges fitting snug to the rim, but didn't know whether to use the long or short shafted lugs for that year.

Would it be safe to assume that the same year's 4runner lugs would fit my '88 truck? I can't imagine that Toyota made them different.

I've found some cheap sets on ebay but don't know about the shaft length issues. Although my Brother-in-law works for a Toyota dealership. I should just call him for the part # and save myself all this extra trouble.

Either the long or short style will work. At least, either style works on my 1992. In fact, I had to use two, short-style lugs on my wheels, because the dealer didn't have enough of the long style to go all the way around.

I just think the long style 'looks' better. They are a 'little' easier to install because you don't have to reach down into the wheel with your fingers as far,,just to get the lug started on the wheel stud.

In Canada & USA 1986-1995 Toyota 4-Runner/pickup would have IFS=independant front suspension therefore they all would use the same wheel offset just make sure to use the corresponding lug nuts as the alloy aluminum wheels had longer lug nuts then the ones used on chrome wheels.
I assume that the newer 4-Runner/pickup years would also be compatible but I am not sure.The Landcruisers used SFA=solid front axle until 1990 (I think) therefore their wheels will not fit just like the 1984-85 4-Runners/pickups and the older pickups.

The rims fit. I tried them today. They clear the front and rear hubs and all brake/suspension components.

Now all I need to do is get some lugs. My brother-in-law works for a Toyota dealership, but his best price was $4/ea. Ouch! That's more than I paid for the wheels w/shipping.

I found some sets on Ebay for around $50. I might give them a shot, as my Brother-in-law told me that Toyota alloy wheel lugs haven't changed in years.

This guy Tom might be able to sell you the proper lugnuts. They are Toyota ones and must be used with the factory alloy rims. (Very expensive through Toyota)

Got lugs...

I picked up a set off Ebay, from P Rico. They fit just fine, and for $30/shipped, how could I pass it up.
Truck looks better now, and sits higher w/the 31's that my brother has given me. I'll post a pic, if I get a chance.
