I get your point, but unfortunately the government is here to govern us, we elect them to make decisions on our behalf for the greater benefit of all. When problems created by heavy swings in the supply and demand balance start causing economic troubles, it is only prudent for the government to step in and restore the balance. Otherwise, those troubles compound needlessly. The old attitude of 'they can't tell me what to do' only works if you live by yourself in a shack out in the middle of bumphuckwest.

Whether you like it or not, fuel efficiency and air quality are hot topics these days, and for good reasons too. This CARS program is addressing these issues too, and doing a lot of good to I would imagine. The longer we can make the planets fuel reserves and air quality last the better I say.

Most people here (not everyone of course) wouldn't be able to tell you what an FJ60 is. Most people wouldn't give them a second look. They are underpowered, noisy, rattly, thirsty, expensive to maintain, hard to get parts for, rusty, some would say ugly, uncomfortable, bad handling, not enough cup holders, crap stereo, no mp3 crap, no outside air temp gauge, no abs, no variable intermittent wipers or heated seats blah blah blah... Hell, in the entire United States there are only 30 something for sale on autotrader ranging from $1200 - $19000. The only thing good about them is they are strong, reasonably reliable and quite good offroad.
I just think its pretty rich to moan and groan about the big bad government destroying something that you think you would want, but would never in a million years actually go out and get, restore, and keep for ever.

I just love the commentary on that video. Very sad to see the car go. Not that I think about it my first car cost me $4,500 with a monthly payment of some $150.00, which meant no more riding on the school bus.

The loss of the LC is sad. I watched several others, the LC ran an incredibly long time!


In addition to all the aforementioned issues what about the pollution? I watched the lot guys burning out, holding the things at full-throttle as they died etc. How long will we have to drive these new clean cars to compensate for the production/destruction of the vehicles rather than letting normal attrition handle the transition to greener vehicles.

Don't be so harsh on the FJs! Just look at the classic looks. I am biased because FJ60's are my favorite truck of all time. Huge, drives like a tractor and amazingly simple looks, terrible brakes maybe, but its all part of the appeal, they are just cool!

And please not another political debate.... The only thing I would say is that I don't think this was supposed to be an environmental effort as much as another economy boost....

What they should do is take each car and donate them to local high schools and technical colleges. That way they might actually do some good by letting students study them and potentially coming up with completely new propulsion systems and electrical components to make cars run cleaner, longer, and better. Who knows how many engineering students might come out of the woodwork if kids in 8th and 9th grade started messing around with old cars? Completely new technologies have come out of just that situation.

WASHINGTON — The Cash for Clunkers buzz is starting to wear off and it seems that some buyers are having serious second thoughts about getting on that government-funded bandwagon, according to a new survey. In the meantime, the U.S. Department of Transportation said that dealers by Tuesday's deadline had submitted a final total of 690,114 Cash for Clunkers deals for $2.88 billion in rebates.

The total is just under the revised $3-billion budget for the four-week program.

The new survey by CNW Purchase Path, of Bandon, Oregon, finds that of nearly 1,000 Cash for Clunkers participants, 17 percent say they have some or serious doubts that they should have made the new-vehicle acquisition.

"Primary reason: They are now facing a $275-$350-per-month car payment that didn't exist prior to acquiring the car or truck," said the report. "That amount, they say, could negatively impact the total family budget more than expected prior to buying the new vehicle."

In contrast, buyers' remorse hits about 6-8 percent of new-vehicle buyers within a month, said CNW Purchase Path.

my dad bought that same year 4runner. Ended up shipping it to Dominican Republic after he retired and is still the proud owner of it. (actually he retrofitted it with a propane setup so that he can use that or gas.

Walked around the back lot of my local dealership with one of the techs the other day. There were far too many lovely old Runners sitting there about to be bombed. It was all I could do not to try to hitch one up to my Runner and tow it to safety! (kind of like rescuing a steel lobster at a restaurant).

Guy in the first video had the right idea about saving some of the parts... too bad he didnt have time to get any off that LC.
