1990 3VZE Manual Drivetrain problems...

Hey guys,
Just got a gorgeous 3VZE 4runner with the 5speed.

First of all, My gas pedal has about 1" of free play until it hits the actual resting point of the connection. Then its REALLY hard and barely moves. Is this the throttle cable, the spring?

Also, Occasionally when shifting into 3rd, and a little less often third, I can't just put the stick into gear, and if I force it, it momentarily grind (1/4 of a second) Not hard or loud, but enough to feel it and hear it.

even though the clutch is to the floor. Any insight?

Also, I drive through San Francisco a lot and I hate the damn e-brake safety release button. Anyway to override that so I can just pull out sideways and put it back it without having to worry about the button?

Also unrelated to drivetrain but...If someone could direct me to a thread regarding the power rear window, that would be fantastic. Mine is extremely slow/doesn't close itself when its cold.

I just had a little input on your 3rd gear question.
Had an issue like this with my 91. It also had alot of trouble getting into reverse.
I changed out the clutch master/slave cylinder and hard-line. Not sure which one had the issue, but they where all leaking a bit. lol
There cheap enough to just replace.
The problem was the clutch was not disengaging completely.
Hope that helps a bit.

Edit.
Also on your gas peddle issue.
Have a friend lift the gas peddle all the way up and check for slack on the cable where it connects to the throttle body. You want to leave a little bit in it, but not so tight that it starts to pull on the throttle linkage. That would make it idle high.

I can see that making sense with the master and slave, this is because when I go to start the car sometimes i have to release and engage the clutch a couple times to get it to start.

I believe I found the two parts. (slave and Master ) do those look correct? What about the hard line?

Also would these be easy enough for me to locate and check to see if they are leaking/replace them myself? any insight? Thanks!

Those look like the right parts to me. If you slide under the passenger side floor board. Look up at that same side of the trans, you should see the slave bolted up there.

As for the master... You can look under the dash to the far left and might see some fluid on the clutch leaver. Then pop the hood and check around the fitting on the side of it. The most likely problem is the o-rings are shot inside both assembly's and letting your presser escape past them.

Another possible cause of your shifting problem could be the synchronizer going out in third gear (since you said the problem is basically with that gear, and not so much with the others). Those can be replaced by a competent trans mechanic without having to replace the whole transmission, if that is the problem. As for the clutch master cylinder, it is quite simple to replace, as is the slave cylinder--they both use simple linkages, and then you just bleed them out thoroughly until you have clean fluid coming out. Best of luck to you!

As for the rear window, I had the same issue. You'll need to replace the rear window relay module. it's just behind the cubby hole on the driver's side, but it's behind the whole trim panel. I grabbed one from the junkyard.

You might have to lube the track or replace the regulator if it's slow.

There's a very good chance that your rear window regulator assembly has a build-up of rust on it (these were notorious for that), and when the parts slide together, they drag and slow down the window operation. As Mike noted above, you may need to give that some attention or it will just keep getting worse as the "crust" thickens.

Opened up the rear window and greased it all down and wd-40 bathed it all. Definately some dirt and rust build up, much better now but I still may need to dedicate a day to sanding down and protecting those sliders.

As for the Tranny, it was continuing to have a hard time sliding into nearly all gears, so it definately seems to be the clutch master and slave.

Bought the parts yesterday and going to tackle it tomorrow. :clap2:

thanks gentlemen!
