1990 4 runner 4 wheel drive ignorance!

Thanks for reading friends, any help is appreciated. I just bought this thing because Ive heard good things but the 4 wheel drive will not ingauge. It has a manual transmision and the v-6. All I see is a lot of vaccum hoses and it looks like perhaps some wires have been torn apart and discarded on the passanger side above the front wheel and taped up. All the info that ive gotten so far is "vaccume cylinoides there and the actuater on the transfer case? Thats it.This is the first 4 wheel drive that ive ever owned and I dont know were to begin tracing down the problem.I bought the manual at auto zone but "Good God Wow!" Any suggestions on where I should start? I know very little about this vehicle. Im impressed that all the power windows and locks still work perfect and the thing drives great for as old as it is but it would be nice if the 4 wheel drive would work. Thank you for any info.

This could be easy, or it could be you hunting down a vacuum leak.

1st, How do you know its not working? get stuck?

2nd, what type of front hubs do you have. Take a look at the center of each front wheel. Is it black with a red dial that says "lock" and "free", if not there will just be a little cap. Your problem could be as easy as just locking the hubs. It you hve the auto hubs, youll need to hunt down the vacuum leak, or switch to manual hubs.

Any chance you could get a picture of the torn apart wires and such.

Those parts are part of Toyota's ADD system that locks your front axle into 4WD when you put the selector in 4HI or 4LO.
