This 1990, 4 runner I bought 1 year ago in August from a Yahoo auction. It was in Rhode Island. I have put about 20,000 miles on it in that year and it runs very well. I have not had any engine problems. I changed the oil every 6,000 miles and kept it lubed up. Mechanically, it is great and only has a few minor hicups (see about these below) But it is a rust bucket and needs some serious attention. Oh yeah, I did wreck it too.
The few mechanical problems it has:
Brakes, when I bought it, the dealer told me that they had replaced the front calipers. After I investigated, it seems like he most likely just rebuilt 1 of them or put a used one on because it did not look new. 3 weeks ago, I rebuilt the rear brakes and replaced some of the brake line that was rusty. The brakes still seem a little spongy and I think it is most likely with the front ones b/c the rebuild on the rear did not fix this prob. I drove with spongy brakes for a year so it is not something that is immediate but I believe it is 1 factor that lead to the demise of the front end.
Exhaust leak: minor, a seal between the pipe and the cat converter.
Transmission: will not go into overdrive until it warms up. This is a sign of a future rebuild but it has many miles left before that. I have had no other problems with the transmission what so ever.
Oil leak: about 2 quarts between oil changes (6,000 miles)
Body damage: rust and front end wreckage, rear bumper ends are gone
All of this is cosmetic. The wreck did not affect any internals.
There is no carpet in the back, just a mat, and the vinyl is pretty beat up due to hauling stuff. I had a sound system installed and I chose to put the speakers in the tailgate becuase it was easier. This was a mistake since they are all beat up now but it is still better than the stock speakers. My sub got ripped off but the amp is still in there under the passenger seat. It also has a singls CD player.
There is no motor for the back window and the regulator is in bad shape. I open the window now by pushing/pulling it up or down but it only goes up as far as your fingers will pull it without someone on the inside as well.
