1990 4 Runner Rear Window Issue

Hello,
I have a 1990 4 Runner and recently the power rear window has developed a

There are a few threads going on this topic already so you may get some good info if you search. Try searching "Tailgate window", "rear window" or get creative.

There seems to a new post about this problem every couple of weeks. It's a very common problem.

Here's a breif summary of what I think happens to the rear windows on the 4 runners.

The seal on the bottom, outside of the window gets old, stiff and sometimes cracked. This allows water to get into the mechanism and it rusts up all the parts for the window. My guess is that if one side needs help going up than that's where the leak is.

I've had the cover off of my tailgate and took a look inside. There was a lot of rust on my window parts.

I plan on taking the whole tailgate apart sometime before winter. I have a few other repairs that have a priority over the window repair so you have to be patient. When I do fix it I'll take lots of pictures and write up a bit of a DIY for rear window repairs.

How do I get the Rear glass out?

Can someone please tell me how to get the rear glass out of the tailgate? I have the new parts I just need to get the glass out to replace the rusted out "slide" at the bottom of the glass. I already have the carpet and the metal access panel removed.

Doesn't Anyone Have Any Ideas?

Can't someone provide a little help on how to get the glass out of the rear tailgate? It is held in by the two arms that raise and lowwer it.

Yo Gravely, I had to take that out of my truck at one poit, I cant really offer great detail but as I remember I took the back padding and upholstery off the inner side of the tailgate to i could see the mechanism, then I used the key to roll the window up while the tailgate was down (I think i had to depress the safety switch) when the window is all the way up you can move the window a bit and get the rollers out of the rails.

When I did it it was cause the rails had rusted and caused the same problem you describe. I bought the rails to replace but it was freakin impossible to get the new ones onto the window. I took it to my mechanic buddy and he couldnt get them on either! so i ended up paying the dealer to redo the system which was pricey... not tying to discourage or anything.... hope that helps

Replacing the rear guides at the bottom of the glass

Hello,
Here are the steps I performed to replace the bottom right (looking down at the open tailgate) guide that attaches to the bottom of the rear window:
1) Remove the carpet cover, the steel cover and the protective plastic.
2) With the tailgate down use a screw driver to close and lock both the latches on the side of the tailgate.
3) Raise and lower the rear glass as needed to unhook both of the

i have a 1990, and have had to pull out the back glass as well. the thing to remember is never allow the spring, well its more of a coil, but anyways dont let it come un done. other then that the glass will slide right up after you loosen and slide the bottom parts over. dont use force, there is 1 and only 1 way it should and will easily be done. toy with it if you cant find it and you will se it in a few seconds. also i have heard of the teeth getting rusted and worn down. this would cause the window shift as it only needs to be off by 1 tooth to create big problems. also if you are wanting the motor to work faster dont spray the metal with wd40 like i did. it worked alot faster for 5 min, then quit. i opted to buy a new motor, as the used ones i found werent in good shape. my saving grace is my friend owns a large salvage yard and rarely charges me.

Can you tell me where to find a replacement seal for the outside of the tailgate? I have an 86. Thanks
