1990 4 runner trouble starting

Hello all, this is my first question here on the boards. I have a 1990 toyota 4 runner v6. I have trouble starting the car. I think it has gone through a few distributor caps and rotors now. Three to be exact. I keep the old ones in the back in case the car does not start. I then replace it with another one (cap and rotors) and viola it starts right up. Any ideas what the problem could be. That would be greatly appreciated.

I would suspect that rather than having a problem with the cap or rotor its a problem with something connected to the cap or rotor.

Next time try it in stages and leave the same cap and rotor in it. Start by unhooking everything you unhook to change it and then hook it back up and see if that gets it.

If not then go on in and lift off the rotor and put it back on and see if that does it.

I bet you have a bad wire or coil wire, problem with the coil, or possibly a problem with something inside the distributor.
