1990 4runner 3.0 Overheating

I put in some radiator flush cleaner and drove for a few hours and drained it and when i replace it with antifreeze the themostat never open and it just overheated. I replaced the themostat and its still doing the same ****. I tryed it without it and it ran fine but leaked aorund where the themostat goes since the gasket wasnt in it so I dont think its the water pump. Any Ideas???

Did you install the t-stat in the direction?
Did you get all the air out of the system?

Well, it could be air trapped in the engine for sure. Some thermostats have a vent, the vent needs to be lined up correctly. Usually 12 o'clock.

Does it overheat when your at idle waiting for the thermostat to open or are you driving it right away before the thermostat opens?

You need to run the engine and get the stat open before you hit the road, this way you get the air out of the radiator (cooling system) and then you top it off and, cap it and run it some more while your watching the temp gauge.

I over heats at idle. How should the thermostat be lined up exactly?

Just a trick I used on a 71 Triumph GT6...

I jacked the front end up of the car and burped the system that way (with the rad cap lose...) Having the front end jacked up allowed the air to go upwards toward the rad... Worked like a charm... Its was being a prick to burp before I jacked the front up...

But defiantly make sure the T-Stat is in properly..
