1990 4runner V6 3.0 High temp/overheating

Hi everyone. Well i am currently in the midst of a problem. I have recently taken into possession a 1990 4runner for my sister while she is out of town. After driving it around for a while i noticed the Temp gauge going into the red. So naturally i checked the coolant reservoir and to my surprise it was empty. So i filled it, let the car run and the radiator sucked it up. Topped it off again and figured i was good to go. Now about 6 days later, that being today. The same problem is occurring.

So i filled the coolant reservoir and let it suck it up, but didn't have enough to top it off again. no biggy. But even with more coolant in it now the SOB is still hitting red.

My best guess is a bad radiator, or radiator hose. But im not seeing any leaking. I did notice however that the hose from the reservoir to the radiator has a mud like substance on it and in the reservoir so i cleaned the hose off and washed out the reservoir tank. but it's still doing it. Any suggestions?

I have the same year 4Runner, and these guys have common problem with the head gasket. About four months ago I had to replace mine because the gasket at the sixth cyl had a hole. When I saw water coming out from one of the joints in the exhaust pipe (around under driver's seat), I immediately towed it to the shop.

They replaced the gasket but now about once a month I have to add more coolant. It seems to get low slowely.

I can't figure out where it goes, hoping it's not the same thing again.

If you don't see any leaks in the engine compartment, look underneath the truck and also the exhaust pipe. If you see a lot of steam that maybe why you are losing your coolant.

I had alsmost a stream coming from the pipe joint.

Toyota had a recall for bad headgaskets for the 3.0 V6, get your V.I.N. and call your local Toyota dealer and they will run your V.I.N. and tell you if your truck is part of the recall, if so it is a free fix they may even install new heads depending on the shape of yours again- free!! You do not have to be the original owner, what do you have to lose CALL THEM!! Let me know how it turns out for you.
