1991 4Runner Automatic V6 - 4WD won't engage?

I drive a 1991 4Runner it's a V6 with an automatic transmission. Whenever I try to put it in 4H or 4L, the green 4WD light does not come on on the dash, and the 4WD doesn't engage. No front wheels spinning or anything. I have auto-locking hubs too. What is going wrong here?

try hooking up a scan tool to your computer and have them manually open and close the solenoid for the 4WD. It could be the shift or gear position sensor has gone bad. It would bring up a Chassis problem, so no check engine light for it.

i had this problem before, not with my 4runner but might help, when you shift your transfer case, does it feel like its hard to put in gear, or does it feel like its not even shifting the case, my problem was it felt like it was not shifting anything, and when i opened the tcase up, the gears were all torn up and warn that even when i shifted the tcase it actually would activate tcase and there fore wouldnt spin the front tires. oddly my rear tires were spining just fine it was just my fronts. i had to rebuild it.

4x4 problem

i had the same problem on my 94. theres an a.d.d. indicator switch on the font differential its a white connector. u can unplug it and use a paper clip to jump the terminals on the plug, that worked for mine, or u might have a vacuum issue to the actuator on the front diff.
