1991 4runner v6 auto, engine check light on

I am in Brisbane AU, and would like to buy a scan tool for the ecu for my 4x4. I have one here that is for later model cars and the plug will not fit.

And for the time being, has anyone got a working link to some details about how to read the ecu codes without a scan tool. I followed several links on this forum and don't get any pages to load.

There is several problems with the poor old girl and its almost undrivable now, so I better start with the ecu codes and work on from there.

you just need a paper clip, locate the diag port, jumper the port with the paper clip, and count the flashes of the check engine light.

I don't supose you know where I can buy an odb scan tool that works with the 91 v6 ?. I looked online can got confused with some of the things they were mentioning about the ODB2 or ODBII and some supporting popular old models, but those old models were not listed.

My ebay search come up with only 3 from china but they were odb2

I jumpered Pin TE1 and E1, then turned the ignition ON, nothing flashes. If I crank the engine it flashes 42 (speed sensor), when the engine is running it flashes 41 (Throttle Position) and then flashes 52 (Knock Sensor).

I have dual fuel (petrol and lpg), it has never run on petrol for 3 years, blocked injectors I imagine), never had a ping or knock till yesterday when I gave it a boot full of gas, so maybe that knock reading was from that. But as for the TPS, well only thing I can do is hunt down another one and replace it.

Is there any reason why the codes wont blink until the engine is running ?. And why the Speed sensor reading only comes up when cranking the engine. Did the LPG installation maybe screw something ? It is the only non standard modification to the machine.

I have been suspect about the speed sensor and mode selector cause for months now the automatic gearbox changes from 1st to 3rd and overdrive kicks in before it reaches 30klm/h reguardless how I have the overdrive switch and the ect power button (so to drive it I have to do manual gear changes). The speed-o works fine, I would expect the speed-o needs the speed sensor to show a speed on the meter, but I might be wrong.

I removed the TPS, opened it up and I see one of the PCB traces is broken and one of the small wires that track along the PCB is broken.

So I called about 15 wreckers so far and can't find a 2nd hand TPS, I called Toyota and can get a new one for $177aus.

I see the part number 198500-0330 (98352-12040) is used on several models of toyotas [4runner, MR2, Camry, Celica, Corolla and a few more]. I can't believe all these wreckers I called don't have any.

In the US there is plenty on ebay, but I don't want to wait that long to get one shipped in even though the prices are ok.

So, anyone here selling one ?.

i dont know about getting a scan tool for obd1, but im glad the jumper method helped you out. im new to 4runners (just bought mine 2 weeks ago) and had come across that link in my own research, so i dont have any answers to your other questions, but i guess it doesnt really matter, since it seems like you found your problem. good luck on finding your tps.

Just order a new TPS from my local Toyota, $177aus. If it lasts 20 years like the original one then its not a bad price.
