1992 RV6 - Low Oil Pressure

I just picked up a 92 RV6 SR5, I have noticed that the oil pressure gauge is showing low pressure when the engine is idleing, but shows normal pressure under higher revs, is this normal or something that is going to put a dent in my plans to spend some money on upgrades for my new toy ?

I have a 1990 4Runner V6.
My oil pressure shows different oil pressure when idling and on higher revs. They do go up and down depending on the engine revs. How low does it show on your truck?
Usually on idling the gauge shows one third, but then it goes up to middle when it's about 2500 RPM.
I do notice that the pressure is higher when the engine is cold through.

Mine sits on about the same, I'm happy it's "normal". I was starting to worry I was going to hit up the "Minister for War and Finance" (Wife) for more money after just having new front shocks and and 2 1/2 free flow exhaust put in. I would not have been a popular boy.

Sorry, buddy! I Have to dissapoint you... I checked my gauge today specially for you. When idling it sits near the middle, not exactly in the middle, slightly to the left, when on higher revs it doesn't go much more than that, slightly to the right, maybe to the middle. The higher the revs the higher the pressure.
When was the last time the oil was changed? Also check what kind of oil was used for. Toyota recommends to use synthetic oil. I personally use semi-synth, due to hot climate I live in. Another question is does your 4R lose any oil in time? Do you have to add oil after a couple thousand miles?

The worst case I think (I may be wrong) is that you are up for changing rings on the pistons. You will also need to get a set of head gaskets which may be a good thing anyway. I had problems with that and 2nd gen 4Runners are knows to have this problem anyway.
Please let me know how it goes... Sorry, buddy!

Oil viscosity you are using will affect oil pressure. You have higher oil pressure when the engine is cold due to the thickness of the oil when cold.

You may not have an oil pressure issue. Try disconnecting the wire to the pressure gauge sender unit and clean it with electrical contact cleaner and reconnect. You will probably get a higher reading. If the connection is oily you may have higher resistance which would translate to a lower reading on the gauge

Spot On JP4, I've just returned from a trip up to see my Brother-In-Law who is a mechanic. I had both CV Joints replaced, A/C regassed, rear brake cylinders replaced and had him check the car over with a few of the other mechanics he works with. All for the price of some seafood and beer. Seems all is good, as you suggested, was just a loose/oily connection.

Sorry to bump this thread. I have noticed the same issue on my
'95. The oil gauge never shows more than 1/4, then goes down to almost the E mark when I'm driving, at any speed. Oil was just changed. Should I try having this connection cleaned that was mentioned above? Is this something someone with extremely limited mechanical experience (ie. none) can do? I just got the vehicle 4 days ago so I don't have any knowledge on how it behaved in the past. Thanks for any help!

Mel,
Did you fix your problem? I have a 95 also and the gauge goes down towards L while idling, and moves to the middle while I'm moving. Just purchased my 4Runner a few weeks back. I haven't had a car with an oil pressure gauge in a long time, so can't exactly remember how it's supposed to work.

I just installed a used engine into my sons 91 that I bought him in March. The engine I bought from a 4runner parts guy in Garland Texas, he said it was a rebuild that was in his friends 4runner that he personally drove.
So, not trusting him I went ahead and tore the motor down, and sure enough it had new head gaskets, new looking main and rod bearings ect.
I went ahead and replaced the oil pump, ported the heads and replaced all the gaskets and seals ect.
Long story short, I got it running the day before yesterday and it started and purred like a kitten on the first turn of the key! The oil pressure went to the middle of the gauge and after the truck warms up it starts to drop. In fact when I drove it home today the gauge rode on L the entire way home! As I rev the motor it will go between first mark (quarter) and as the rpms decrease it goes back to L.
I'm not happy about this at all. I plan on putting a master gauge on it tomorrow to get a correct reading. I really hope it's just the gauge because I don't know why it would loose pressure.

Anyone got any ideas?

Bryan
