1993 4Runner A/C Problems

Well I have an intermittant A/C problem on my 1993 4Runner SR5 with 6cyc, automatic 2x2. (133K)

A/C is charged with R134 by the dealer about 12 months ago. Sometimes its cold, sometmes just the fan blows. Yesterday it was out all day. Today it worked fine.

Dealer said it may be the "H-Valve" deep under the dash. I looked t at the manual and do not see an H-Valve anywhere.

Any ideas on what to do first?

Be careful on some 1993 model vehicles. Many of them came with R-12 (Freon) in the A/C system, which is not compatible with R-134a (the newer stuff).

Has your system been "retrofitted" in order to handle R-134a? There should be a sticker somewhere near the evaporator or compressor that will indicate the factory refrigerant and another near the radiator support if a technician has retrofitted it for a different kind.

Good luck!!

P.S. R-12 is very hard to get nowadays - unless you live in Mexico, Asia or Africa. LOL!

The first thing that comes to my mind is the damper switch inside the system itself is not opening. Many times you can rig them to work properly but it is really only a temporary fix.
