1993 Clutch Problems

I have a 1993 4Runner 3.0 V6, 5-speed 4wd. When I start out in 1st gear with from a dead stop it is almost impossible for a smooth take-off. It is almost always very shaky espcially when the vehicle is cold.

If I try to start out with a rolling start in 1st gear it is usually no problem and is very smooth, like it should be.

Generally shifting through the gears is very smooth, but occasionally when the vehicle is cold I feel some slippage in the clutch.

The clutch supposedly only has 50,000 miles on it.

Do I need to:
1) replace the clutch
2) get a new flywheel due to hot spots
3) have the hydraulic system looked at or adjusted

Without looking at the parts it's hard to say. Do you know what parts were replaced at 50K? You may have a foreign substance on the disc facings, or hot spots on the pressure plate or flywheel (or both). Ya gotta take it apart for sure. It sounds like it's releasing OK so I would think the hydraulic system and the throwout bearing are good. Be sure to check the pilot bearing while you're in there.

Thanks for the quick reply drmorbius. I am not sure what was replaced and exactly when it was replaced.

I haven't had much experience working on vehicles and do not know much about clutch systems, but with the right tools and a place to work, i think i could figure something out.

One thing I notice is that when my foot is completely off the clutch pedal there is a chirping noise that comes from beneath the truck. Sounds like it is near the transmission. If i rest my foot on the clutch or push the clutch in, the chirping noise goes away. Not sure is that could have anything to do with it?

Do you have any suggestions on where to start and what to look for if I start taking things apart?

That sounds like the throw out bearing is going bad.

So that probably means it wasn't replaced when the clutch was replaced. Right?

Either that or it was defective or a cheapo.
