Just started to put the 3.0 together after having the heads done, am installing new Fel-pro head bolts. They didn't come with washers, which was fine as I thought they did not need one. Than I looked at the old head bolts, and they did have washers. Now I know these are not original as the engine was previously rebuilt, but should washers be used? I'm confused as I have mostly heard no, but have seen head bolts for Rock Auto with separate washers for sale.
I'm thinking that maybe, just maybe, the other guy had the block rebuilt and needlessly used washers on the head bolts, which caused the heads to prematurely have
issues. This is a theory, am just trying to guess what happened, as I noticed for the first time today, that the pistons are .20 over. I had thought I bought a
95 with 150K that had the top end problems. When I pulled the heads, I noticed nice swirling in the cylinders, and no ridge in the cylinders, but never noticed the .020 on top of each piston. Am wondering if I have a low mile rebuilt short block that failed prematurely due to unnecessary washers used on the head bolts. Am I completely wrong? just have no idea
