What location could be used for a hot wire that wired to only be hot when the ignition is on, like a cigaret lighter? I am a visual guy so a picture would be great.

Most guys tap the switched 12v wire into the radio.

I don't know what gives with the Japs but the switched cig lighter and the AC compressor staying engaged as long as the vehicle is running once it is switched on are two of my pet peeves with their vehicles. Run a new wire from the battery to the hot pin on the lighter. Factory ground is already on the lighter.
Install fuse at battery. Now your phone will charge when vehicle is off.
The deal with some Jap vehicles is say you cut the defrost on to defrost the windshield for a few minutes in the AM. Until you turn the engine off the compressor continues to run (burning extra fuel) even when you turn the defrost off. Not sure on 4runners but have seen it before.
