1995 Four Runner with Auto Transmission Problem

Hello All,

Looking for some advice regarding my 4runner.

120k

All original engine and transmission.

Transmission Fluid smells different, but not burnt or rancid, Transmission runs fine until vehicle gets to normal temperature. Vehicle will suddenly no longer move as vehicle is in Drive it just will not go anywhere (I can coast to the side of the road) still in drive, engine RPM is normal (when this happens I can rev the vehicle in Drive it just does not go anywhere). No funny noises or smells when this happens.

I have the money to throw at this and have the torque converters and transmission rebuilt if necessary. I just am looking for input from this site as to what I should do in the mean time. I do not want to get taken to the cleaners with a transmission shop. I am in the 530 area code if anyone can pm me with a reputable shot that would be helpful in the near future.

Thanks again for any help,

Chris

Let your 4runner idle in the driveway, and heat up to operating temperature. Then, with the engine running, and tranny in park, check the fluid level on the dipstick. If its too low, you may just have low fluid. If its too high, you may either be overfilled (unlikely), or you have an internal leak when it heats up. Also, take a white paper towel, and drag a streak of tranny fluid across the towel. It may not smell burned or anything, but color can tell you alot. Write back with more info or some of your own diagnosis, and we'll be here.
