The official towing capacity of my 95 4Runner is 3500 lbs. Would it be safe to tow a 4000 lbs. boat for short distances?

Wow, and 300lbs less for 96 - 97, and plus I believe but check me on that... When I sold them 96 - 97 it was 3200lbs per the Manual... I do not know about the 95 for sure, but I would guess 3200 or maybe 3000 with the 3.0...
I would not hesitate to put 3500 behind any of the V6 models, or 4000 for that matter. Woould probably stop there though.

Anyway, I heard that autos can tow much more than manuals? Anyone know if thats true or not?
I am wondering if it is a good (or bad) idea to tow my mates wakeboard boat 500m down the road and up and down the ramp. Its a big boat, I think 5600 lbs with the trailer. I know its probably not legal so i better not get into any crashes, but Im mainly concerned whether or not I will total my cars engine/tranny/diffs.
Its a 94, 5spd, 3.0.
(I am picturing it like in the movies where the trailer rips off the tow package and rear axle as Im trying to pull it out of the water!)

I would say that is not a good move. Both the 4 and 6 cylinders from the second gen. were rated at a towing capacity of 3500 pounds. Your friends boat is 2100 lb more than that. Way too much.
