1995 V6 starts, dies after 3 seconds

A buddy's 4Runner has had its engine replaced with another used engine. It starts, then dies after about 3 seconds, consistantly.
According to my buddy, he has fuel pressure and spark.
I'll be looking at it tomorrow, and was hoping I could be given some direction. Is this a common problem after engine work?

Could be a security feature. My Chrysler will do the same thing if I try to start with a key that doesn't have the transponder in it. So is he using the same key with the same brain (computer) as before?

OMG it was way too easy...

Went over yesterday afternoon and found.....
That the tubing from the AFM to the throttle body was not installed.
Installed tubing, ran like a champ.
D'oh!
Apparently they are used to working on American cars without AFMs.
