1996-2002 4Runners: Interference or non-interference

Ok, sorry to post this again, but I am getting mixed information.

I have a 2001 4Runner SR5, with obviously the 3.4L V6. Is my motor an interference or non-interference motor? This is in regards to the timing belt and when it should be replaced. Thanks to all in advance that give me friendly advice.

Non-Interference.

It's not to say something bad couldn't still happen if it broke, but it shouldn't b/c it's considered a non-int.

I know Land Cruisers had always been Interference motors. (I don't know about the new FJ Cruiser.)

The newest of the newest motors Toyota has started to release are now leaning towards Interference. The reason being, these motors are a lot tighter than before.

In reguards to when the T-belt should be replaced, Toyota service reps have always told me the Timing Chain in older 4Rs should be replaced every 100k miles, but the T-belt in the 3.4L 4Rs should be replaced @ 60k miles. I've owned four 4Runners (one 2nd Gen and three 3rd Gens) and in 3 of them (4th one only has 26k miles on it) I've replaced the T-belt @ 100k miles. It wasn't b/c it was broke or damaged, but I thought, why chance it.

Some guys replace them at 60k to be on the safe side, others I know replaced them @ 130k miles. For me, I'll stick w/ what works and just keep replacing them @ 100k miles rather than wait until it breaks.

In the later 3rd generation models, Toyota recommends 90,000 miles. You have a 2001, in my 2001 manual it states 90,000 miles. I have heard about people going longer, I like the advice from Rock Slide and go 100,000 miles. I think I may follow that advice myself. I have about 81,000 miles right now.

Yes. I will probably push it until 100K. I'm also very eager to get my truck to that milestone in mileage LOL.

A high Quality Belt will last you over 60K for sure and you can easily push to 100K+. But and that is a big but if the Water Pump start leaking, The coolant will attack the belt and start eating it alive and could fail prematurely regardless if it a good Belt or not. so the best thing is to check for leaks and make a determination based on that, regardless I would replace every 90-100K. My truck is 2002 @ 270,000K I plan to do the Job by year end!

Wouldn't be surprised if those guys you quoted back in 2006 never got around to changing theirs. I'm currently at 249k, so I am going to get on this soon, along with a new water pump and fan clutch. The original owner never replaced much of anything!

My 4Runner had the original belt from 1999 and was very surprised it made it to 2021. Had 220k on it but the water pump/idlers were ready to seize. It would be funny if one of the members from 2006 replied back :laugh:

I had a 1997 with all the original belts on it at spark plugs with 118k miles on it. The timing belt was cracking from age.. :/ I changed it all though when I bought it. Like 2 or 3 years ago.
