1996 3.4L loss of power and cel on

Hi,

New to the forum and hoping this is the correct place to ask this question.
I have 1996 3.4L sr5 2wd that has 198K on it. I was driving the other day and the truck lost power and the CEL came on. I was doing 25mph in town when it happened. I took it to my local mechanic and he put the computer on it and said that I need a new MAF sensor and IAC valve along with a new air intake tube from maf to throttle body for a grand total of $1500 bucks.
I recently had the valve covers gaskets replaced and I am pretty sure that they cracked the intake tube when they did that.

My question is this. Based on reading stuff on the internet it seems like the first step is to replace the cracked air intake tube and clean the maf and iac before forking out that kind of cash. Am I headed in the right direction?

That's seems like an absurd amount of money for an afternoons work on your part. What I would start with is checking to make sure the intake actually has a crack in it. Then I would pull the maf and give it a real good cleaning, do you have any kind of air filter that is oilable? If so the oil gets on the sensor wires and throws codes. If it's not running rough I'd say it's probably not the iac, the throttle body may need cleaning though. That's where I'd start, it's absolutely bananas to pay that kind of money, you could replace the motor for that.

Report back with what you find and keep the thread updated with your findings

Also what are the cel codes? Was the CEL light blinking or steady? If you don't know what the codes are have them read at a local auto zone or get your own inexpensive odb2 reader off ebay/amazon.

I took care of a small crack in my intake tube with silicone, you may be able to also. Luck. :cowboy:
 
definitely cleaning before droping money. you would be surprised the difference between a dirty and clean maf and throttle body. there's plenty of write ups on here to walk you through if your unfamiliar. i personally would never drop that kind of cash on this problem. what code was it?
 
Thanks for the replies. I just got the throttle body intake tube and plan on working on this in a few days. I agree that the mechanic is crazy expensive. He was quoting about $800 in parts from the toyota dealership and 4-5 hrs of work. He is a trustworthy guy, but here in Honolulu there is plenty of work and most mechanics wont go out of their way to look for cheaper parts.

Hopefully cleaning the MAF, throttle body and IAC valve does the trick. The mechanic said the codes were related to that.
