1996 3rd Gen Removing the front bumper (fender)

Hi guys

I want to take my front bumper (fender) off to fit a new piece of trim and get it resprayed, as far as I can see, all I need to do is:

- undo the four 14 mm head bolts into the chassis;
- undo the two 10 mm nuts on the right angle brackets which bolt onto another bracket which bolts onto the inner wing;
- disconnect the indicators.

Is this all, or am I missing something?

Sounds about right. The later trucks with the impact absorber crossbar also have some bolts below in the middle.

I have an 02 and that's all I did. Exactly as you said.

Not sure where you live, but if you live in an area with salt, be very gentle with the 10mm bolts in the wheel wells. Mine were rusted and I snapped both in half and accident bent the bracket they hang in. I was being pretty gentle but the brackets are pretty soft and flexible.

Go after it with confidence. The bumper on the older 96-98's is not very heavy. Start with the electrical connectors and smaller bolts if you can so that you don't snap one like the other person mentioned.

This is a job you'd have to try really hard to mess up. If you are worried about dinging or scratching the bumper, just place a blanket on the ground to set the bumper on. You can do it!

I'm expecting the 10 mm bolts to snap (they are captive bolts on the right-angle brackets), so I have a new pair on order.

Mine is a 'wide body' Hilux Surf with the big factory arch flares, and the bolts holding those onto the front bumper will be seized I imagine, so new ones of those too
