1996 4runner 2.7 base headunit ?

I have picked up a 96 anthricite 2.7 5 speed manual 4x4 for basic winter transportation and some off road exploring. I have searched and can't find the answer- I have the base radio/tape player in my rig and am wondering if I can do a swap to a scion headunit? If so will it be plug and play? What model headunit would work best for the 96? Any info would be appreciated.
