1996 4runner Lmtd, going for bigger tires

Hello all, I am new to the site and enjoying at the amount of information that is available. My "rookie" questions has to do with re-gearing for bigger tires. I bought a 1996 4runner limited, the stock tires are 265/70r-16 which according to the Miata.net tire calculator are equivalent to 30.6 in tires. I was thinking of going to 33" tires. Will I have to re-gear in order to go up in tire size. I found data on my for runner which suggests the stock ratio is 4.30:1.

I have 33.5" mud tires that are treadwrights which I believe are heavier then most 33"s but I didn't re gear and I feel they are fine
 
Not at all. 4.30 is perfect for 33's. Downpour11 is still running the 4.10's with his 35's!
 
He could run 44"s on 4.10s if he wanted to, doesn't make it right... ;)
4.30 is a bit on the deeper end for 33/285s, but you won't incure any major pain.

I would think brakes and proper damping should take a considerably higher priority
when going to oversize tires rather than mess with regear ratios right away.
 
You can check what gear ratio you actually have by looking at the sticker in the door jam. On the bottom right corner look for this code... A03A=4.10 or A04A=4.30
 
I have same year truck, somewhat of the same lift and run treadwright 33" muds. I had stock 265's and I cant tell a difference without regearing. Gas mileage got a little worse.
 
Do you have an E-Locker? If so, 4.30 most likely. If you have an open diff most likely 4.10. I have 4.10 with my open diff on my 1996 4Runner and only with 265/75R16 tires it is a complete dog. I think my V6 manual trans reg cab Taco ruined me :) and that has 33s on it.

I think all these motors with the auto and 265's are dogs. The manual really makes it feel like it has a lot more tq than it really has. Not to mention your taco is a little lighter in the rear.

Yes, I have an E-Locker. Since my friend and I installed the suspension I have been riding easy trails and putting mileage on the car. I installed a K&N reusable filter, which has made a difference in the power. Last week I went to a place called Cleghorn trail and the car performed well, eventhough I only drove throught easy and moderate sections of the road. I went with some friends in K-5's and it seemed to keep up ok.
