1997 4runner: disc brake dust shield rusted off

Again some rust toll: Both front disk brake dust shields are falling off.
I bought new sheet metal parts but I saw that I needed to remove the front part of the axle (I guess the wheel bearings..where the 6 studs for the sheel log nuts are located) in order to install these shields?
Do you have any manual how to do this job? I am not brave enough.

I removed the axle cap and removed the nut ...but that was about it....
I put everything back together.

Need help.

That flange has to be pressed out of the spindle itself. Once it's pressed out you have to replace things like wheel bearings and seals. Gets spendy.

There was a great idea floating about where the backing plate is cut in half horizontally so it can be installed two bolts per side...I have not done it personally, thought it an interesting solution to an otherwise expensive endeavor.

Thanks

Why do you think I 'have' to replace seals and bearings?
Just because I am there? Or do I destroy things on the way?

I pushed the shaft quite bit back when I was in there two days ago... I put everything back in place..hope this was not a mistake...

Cutting the shields in half and then weld them back together could work... but hey also a long haul.

What are these shields for: preventing gravel/ rocks to fall against the brakes?

The bearings and seals are usually ruined when the hub flange is pressed out. Prolly best left to someone who's got the press to do it, if you don't.

The big nut you pulled (35mm) is for the cv shaft. You can get that shaft out of the hub (have to unbolt the 4 lower ball joint bolts to move the spindle to get the shaft all the way out) but it will not cause the flange- the part with the 6 wheel studs- to come out and you will not be able to remove the dust shield.

The posts on cutting the shield in half horizontally allowed them to be bolted on as two separate pieces, no welding needed. Again, haven't done it. Will give it a try should I have to replace mine.

It is just a dust shield pretty much as you described.

Thanks...got it,

the shield halves would not be reconnected...maybe a couple spot welds and good...I had very much trouble to remove the 4 screws on one side (didn't try the other side.. Maybe I'd weld the shield directly on if I can't get these bolts off.
Should actually work well (the halves) the more I think about it.

Yeah..removing the wheel bearings would really suck... you are right, not worth it.

My 97's have pretty much rusted off too that was over two years ago, nothing is any different without them, I'm not going to bother replacing them.
