1997 4Runner SR5

I own a 97 SR5. I have been smelling a type of "rotten egg" odor every day. I spoke to the dealer about it and said try a different grade of fuel. No success. This usually happens when I kind of floor it at a traffic light or press on the accelerator to change lanes on the highway. Also it seems to smell stronger when the engine is not up to temperature (mornings or first start).

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

My guess is that your catalytic converter might be going bad - but it could also be a defective oxygen sensor. Is you "Check Engine" light coming on at all? Maybe you might want to take a trip to AutoZone and use their diagnostic tool (shouldn't cost anything at all) to determine whether or not a fault code is present.

The rotten egg odor is sulfur, and even my '05 4Runner gives off that odor from time to time.

Good luck finding the exact cause of this problem.

Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. I had the 02 sensor replace early last year because the check engine light came on. The CAT. That makes sense. My 4Runner has 165,600 miles on it with the original CAT. Not sure these days if I'll sell it and get another or another vehicle, so I'll think about it.
