1997 4runner: tank band runsted off!

I was inspecting the underside of the 4 runner... I saw that one steel band holding the tank? was entirely rusted off... There is a skid plate underneath the tank...so the tank would not fall off right away but I wanted to ask knowledgeable people how to repair this thing.

Take the skid plate off and install a new band?

You can't believe how rusty the skid plate is.. I think I have to cut off each single bolt...what a pain of a screw system Toyota is using instead of good old nuts and bolts!

Can I get this tank band from Toyota? What part number?

I think I need to replace this thing soon because... I don't know how this thing holds up right now.

Should only be one bolt to remove which bolts on the outside near the sway bar link. Probably will have a piece of the tank strap hanging on it. The inside strap connection is where you use the pin and clip. Whenever I cant get a bolt of I use a little heat. It's makes a job exponentially more difficult when you start breaking bolts. It's near the gas tank (about 4" in front of it) but angle the flame down onto the bolt and it will be fine. I use a MAPP gas torch from Home Depot.

I'll go an get the parts... you are right ..it should not be too dramatic to change.
I hope the tank is in okay shape when I remove the skid plate.

is it possible to tuck the tank up at all if you have a body lift? I know its pretty close in the back to a frame cross tube, but there shouldnt be anything in the front.

Possible, yes.

PITA level? x1.5 million.

The strap can not be easily moved like the Tacoma one can. Unless you take the body off.

Also, while you get the strap up, the front of the tank won't go up, unless you make some kind of custom crossmember for it.

Then, unless you have a 3-4" BL, the tank is STILL going to hang down below the frame rail.


Just do the F-150 swap like my brother, [MENTION=118207]midcoma[/MENTION], did.

Hi JRZEE,

If you think I can make use of the strap I'd purchase the parts and see what is possible... of course the risk is that the tanks is equally rusted as is the rest of the underside of the truck.... but I'd give it a try.
Is there a favorite shop where I can use your parts numbers. I tried Village and Lithia but they don't know the numbers for some reason.

I don't think I have the nerves and time to put a F-150 tank in there. Let's try easy things first. The 4runner would have gone to the junk yard if I had not put 100 hours into the frame welding all the holes down there.
It survived the first winter well. Will see if I can get another couple years out of this nice truck.
