1997 bigger tires

My sons 1997 4runner 4x4 came stock with 265 tires he wants bigger , will a 285-75-16 fit without a lift???

guys, correct me if im wrong, but I believe it will fit with some minor rubbing...you will have to trim the wheelwells a little if you dont want that rubbing...

he wants the coil spring 1 1/2 lift so that may help

I'm no expert on tires, so hopefully someone else can answer more definitely...thats one of the few things i dont have much experience with is tires :/

I would go with 265 75 R16's. You don't want rubbing, especially if you off-road.

265/75s will be the biggest you can go on a 3rd gen. 4runner being stock. 285/75s will require a lift or trimming of the fenders. i would recommend at least 2-2.5" of lift. even with that, he may have some minor rubbing at full tilt. if he just wants some bigger tires, go with the 265/75. its a size bigger than the stock 265/70s. if he wants it more aggressive, go with an AT tire like the BFG AT, Nitto Terra Grappler, Bridgestone Dueler Revo, or something along those lines. hope this helps.

I like others don't think they will fit. I have Michelin LTX 265/75/16 tires and they are a close fit with no rubbing.

+1 Go with 265/75/16's. I went that route cause I wanted to fill up more of the fender well.

They CAN fit without a lift. Need to do some trimming in the wheel wells, though.

285s w/no lift don't do too well since they jam into the wheel well very quickly and 285s might fit but aren't the wisest choice and a lift would be smart.

I off roaded with a guy running 285s on his stock '00 suspension and even with the trimming he did he was eating up his fender well plastic whenever he compressed the either side especially on the rear.

Hold up, my bad. I meant 255/85/16's (which are obviously narrower, but taller than 285's). You can fit those in with the stock suspension and trimming.

Why not lift it? Thats the point of a lift kit is to fit bigger tires. I wouldnt want to cut my fenders that much just to fit bigger tires. You will have alot of clearance issues at full lock/compression

i have 275/70/16s and if i hit just right they will rub, i wouldnt even try for anything bigger without a lift

I work at Costco Tire Shop and we would not put a 285 on a stock 4runner rim (I still have a lot to learn about tires and correct application but from what I do know keep reading). Other places may do it but I would imagine you would have some rubbing. The sidewall will be under considerable pressure because the rim really isn't wide enough, which can cause the belt package to separate. When the rolling diameter changes over 3% (from stock) the handling of your truck will be altered greatly. Also your speedometer will be off. My guess is that you would have to lift and get a bigger rim. Those 285s would look really sweet though.
