have a 1997 sr5 4x4 with the v6. got it on a trade cheap! when i got it a heater hose was busted and i fixed it. fired it up and its the roughed ride ever. i got it scanned and it said cyl3 misfire which is a non coil side. changed the spark plugs and the wires then scanned it and it said cyl 4 misfire and i put a coil on it and no change...it idles rough and after you get in 3rd or so gear running 55 it shutters bad, which i believe is the trans or the toque converter locking up...but now im worried about the bad idle and drive. any advice help is more than appreciated! thank you all!

Pull the plugs, compression test. If it is, make sure you roted the plug wires correctly. Cylinder 3 is indeed a coil pack side, so that might be part of your problem right there.

Wire routing is:

1___4
3___6
5___2

If compression is good, plugs, coil packs and wires are all good, I'd start with a fuel filter and some Seafoam though the gas tank. But most likely it'll wind up being injectors. If that's the case, pull them out and send them to WitchHunter Performance - Injector Cleaning & Flow Testing Services

i replaced the plugs and the wires. i put the coil in and no change so i took it back to get that 70$ back lol. im gonna change fuel filter today and do some sea foam and ill get a scope to see and listen and feel if the injectors are pulsing i hope its on coil side if one is bad because the other side ill have to take off intake :/

I have the same issue

I have the same issue with my 97 3.4 4runner. Just finished head gasket job, and did the timing job as well, now I have a high idle, and a misfiring issue. I already replaced the coil pack farthest away from the firewall on the passenger side, and had no change, I have adjusted the throttle body a few times, checked the wires and plugs....not sure whrre to go from herd

seems this problem is pretty common as I am having the same exact issue. I've changed the coil packs, plugs and the 246 plug wires.....still doing it. Did anyone find a possible solution to this problem?:noidea:

what did you use for replacement plugs and wires? bosch? NGK?, denso?, autolite? duralast?.... that will make a huge difference, im gonna guess that sense you only spent $70 on a new coil that you didnt use a denso, and there fore its a $70 paperweight. and if im right you probably used some cheap plugs or you thought you were getting a good plug and bought the boschs... am i right? if so yeah your problem is still with the plugs and wires...

only use denso or NGK plugs and make sure they are the dual electrode plugs, as for wires, again only NGK or denso(factory oe) wires. only use denso(factory oe) coil packs as well. after doing this, and ensuring that you have the wires routed correctly, if you still have a miss fire, try swapping the problem coil pack with another cylinder and see if the problem stays in its original location or fallows the coil pack. if it stays you can rule out the coil pack and start looking into the injector(assuming that the plugs and wires are brand new and you did not damage them during instal). if it fallows, and you have not changed coils packs(as they are pretty spendy and not usually a item that fails regularly -most of us are on the original coil packs and have over 200k+miles) you can look into replacing the coil pack(again assuming the plugs and wires are new...). if you need to replace a coil pack id look into buying a used one out of a wrecked truck as that would be much cheaper...
