Have a 1997 2WD 4 cylinder with 250,000. Check engine light comes on and off lately; finally had it checked out. Initial code at parts store was for shift solenoid and more detailed reading at transmission shop read "Shift Solenoid "A" Electrical". After detailing symptoms, transmission shop suggested not replacing solenoid. The check engine light always comes on when going up steep incline. It occasionally comes on when slowing down on highway to exit. When light is on, the shift is very sluggish, very slow off the block. After a day or so, CEL goes away and everything is fine. Transmission guy feels as though there is problem with electrical to the solenoid. If solenoid is bad, problems would be consistently evident. What does the forum think?
