1998 4Runner has trouble moving from stop

Ecu is defenately not a cheap part to buy, in fact I just checked and it's around 1200$ here in Canada. If you don't have immobiliser, you can check on the net or salvage yard.

There's a way of testing it but I need to upload a pdf file or send you an email to show you how you can backprobe it. That way you'll be sure if you buy an ecu.

mine does the same

When I first start it up its fine I give it a little gas is sputters like crap just like having the parking brake on wile trying to go up a hill. My 0-60 is in the 40s and and over a quarter mile oh yeah i live in Florida so its not cold it does the same when i have it in 1st with o/d off but soon as it hits 4000 it takes off fine that is if it makes it to 4000 most of the time it sputters out at 3000

Check the bellcranks on the rear brake backing plates. It is a poor design that leaves it exposed to the elements. One or both often seize up creating the the symptoms you are describing. The only real long-term fix is to remove the bellcrank, clean out the rust and lubricate the heck out of it with a good sticky grease or anti-seize (I used anti-seize). The removal process is easy. A couple of bolts and a pin or two and it's off.
