1998 4runner solid axles

I want to build up my 98' 4runner limited. I am trying to figure out what a good moderate jeep trail/expedition build for Colorado would be. I have a family so i can't be crazy with this setup primarily due to cost and function. I want a vehicle i can take my family up to the mountains for the weekend with. I am thinking of starting with axles and suspension. I guess i don't know what some sensible goals for that type of build would be. Questions i have are things like; Solid front axle swap? Old Man Emu lift kit enough? Locking Diffs in the rear enough? Thoughts?

SAS would be crazy, and putting you into a dedicated trail rig/trailer queen.

Get some good tires, armor, mild lift (OME is good), recovery gear, and go hit the trails.

If you don't want to go crazy forget a solid axle swap, it's costly and really isn't necessary for your planned use. An OME suspension will get you 2-3" of lift and a real good ride and handling. Add a rear locker and some good tires and you'll be able to go anywhere you need.

Remember KISS.

:D lol

Agreed with above. Plus, theres tons on here to read and see what others have done.

Thanks for the good straightforward feedback. If I was to go with an OME suspension kit, what size tires are people running with those? For rear lockers, what is the best option for all around cost/reliability; Detroit, ARB, etc? Thanks again for the tips.

you should be able to fit 33's, and you shouldn't have to regear with 33's. There will be some loss of power and mpg (anytime you go to taller tires) but it's not bad enough to regear. Personally, I like ARBs, but there are less expensive options, you may even be able to find a used Toyota e-locker.
