1998 Tire size

Did the 1998 2WD T4R's have a smaller rim size than the 4WD vehicles? The tires on the 1998 I just bought look smaller than most of the 4WD types I'ver seen.

It depends. You might have 15" rims which did come with smaller tires. I think either 225/75 or 235/75. If you have 16's then you should have 265/70 which is the stock tire size. Many people are running 265/75/16, which are an inch bigger than the stock 16" tire. Also brand and type of tire can make them look small.

I went to get new tires the other day on my 4WD SR5 with 16 inch factory 6 spokes. But my door jamb said 225/75, so they wouldn't put on the new tires. Still not sure why that is, but oh well.

Lol. That's gotta be THEE most ret*rded tire shop around. They won't mount 16" tires on 16" wheels? So do they think it's illegal to change wheel size or something? (this one cracked me up)

BTW, the majority of our door jams say 225/75/15 - even though most of our trucks were originally sold with 16s. Many were switched out by the dealers before they were sold. Some of these tire shops are just ridonkulous. What's with this? Anyone know why so many tire shops act like jackasses nowdays?

This was Wal-Mart, so that's why they did it. I didn't question it much besides telling the clerk that they were factory rims.

It actually ended up being a good thing, because I went to a local shop and got 285's (instead of 265's at Wal-Mart) plus mount, balance, alignment, and my spare changed to 265/75 for 870 bucks. So it's all good.

I'm glad to hear that most door jambs say 225/75/15. I was beginning to wonder about the history of my Runner, haha.

in 1998, the base and the SR5 editions came with 15 in wheels. The limited's came with the 16 inch.

However, I like everyone else has changed to the 16's and much larger tires. Since you got the bigger tires, you will need a lift!

It's random for the SR5s. I know of a few people with '98 SR5s that came with 16" wheels and brakes like my '97 SR5 did (regardless of the door sticker). I do believe that all base models came with 15s and all the Limiteds came with 16s though.

If I traded up from 15's to 16's would I have to change out anything else ... struts anything like that? I kind of like the look of the larger tires.
