1998 Toyota 4Runner 16" Rims & Tires To 15" Rims & Tires

Hi,
This is all new to me, was wondering if I can get some help. I have a 1998 4Runner with 16" rims & tires, I would like to switch to 15" rims & tires, will this work? Thanks in advance for your help.

yes, but why? going to a 15" wheel will drastically limit your tire selection... and the 16" is stock and pretty much the standard for vehicles now. if your runner is a limited it might not work, as some of the limiteds had bigger brakes that require the 16" wheel and will only accept some 15" -depending on design, width, and offset.

Reason is I have 360,000 miles, runs great, but not to sure how long it's going to run for. I hate to spend the $$ on new 16" and have the truck not last, so I figure if I can pick up some used 15" at a good price, that someone changed out, it may be a good way to go, don't you think so? Also still have the original clutch, not bad, right?

Do you have 15 inch rims laying around that fit? If you're buying used tires, I'm thinking the cost difference would be negligible anyways. Just stick with what you've got.

So instead of finding some cheap new 16" wheels, you're going to buy new wheels and tires? Not understanding how that's very cost affective :shrug:

the 265 70 16 tire is about as common as they come for a standard tire for a midsized pickup or suv, if anything id go up in size to a 17, cause most newer (in the last 5-8yrs) mid size trucks and suvs run 17" wheels and the 265 70 17 tire. like i was saying a 15" tire is getting more and more limited as auto manufactures move a way from the 15" wheel and go larger.

I'd bet you $10 that doesn't have the original clutch in it.

You're better off buying some used tires for the 16" if it manages to die anytime soon just sell the tires haha. I feel like it'd be better for the truck just to stick with factory size, a $400 loss wouldn't be terrible if you get new tires, you'll get much more when you part out your truck when it dies in 150k more miles of great maintenance.


And you speak if wasting money on a car with 340k or whatever, DON'T SKIMP OUT ON YOUR FLUID CHANGES. You'll waste your potential vehicle life.

Well, took your advise and went with the 16" new tires, prob the right choice, $700 later, feels like I am riding on air, good for another 50,000, really, though it is the original clutch, bought the runner with only 20,000, and had it since, truck is a BEAST ! Timing belt & brakes lasted forever too!
