1998 TR4 SR5 and a new grinding sound

Hello folks, me and the man friend have a 98 with over 294K on the odo and pretty much nothing mechanically wrong with it. He drives it 82 miles round trip to work and it has been an awesome truck. Anyway, I was driving it into work this morning and when I would stop at a red light there was this horrid grinding sound coming from under the truck. For some reason I put the truck in neutral and the sound went away. I continued to do this at each light I stopped at when I heard the noise. When I got to work I parked let the truck idle a bit in my spot to see if it did anything and it didn't. Can someone help me out? I'm hoping it isn't something major and ridiculously expensive.

were you coming to a stop when you heard the noise or were you already sitting at the light stopped? and when you put it in N, it immediately went away?

Sitting at a stop then it would start and as soon as I put it in neutral it went away. Didn't do it in park while idling.

you say it was a grinding noise, could it have been a rattle? i cant think of anything (other than your fan, accessory drive belts, crank/engine) that would be rotating from under the truck while it was not moving.

also when you put it in neutral or drive is takes the transmission out of gear and takes the load off the tranny. there are some weights to balance the transmission and heat shields underneath that could cause a rattle sound but i dont really know about a grinding noise.

I'll have to listen to it again on my way home. He just had a trans service done on it a week or so ago so maybe something wasn't put back together right. This right here is why I lease my cars, lol Have an issue, take it in, warranty, done.

yeah the tranny work could possibly be a problem. other than that im kinda out of ideas for a grinding sound at a stop.

I had the same symptoms before my water pump and timing belt job. It was the fan clutch idler bracket. It's a grinding/crunching sound (the bearing was shot). See if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from (under the truck where? Sometimes noises can mislead you). When was the last time you had a WP/TB change?

Not sure on the water pump timing belt since there is no service records for it from the previous owner. It just had a tune up two weeks ago and the guy said everything looked good. I'll have to listen to it on the way home and when I get home, but it doesn't do it in park.

My pinion bearing failed, creating the same symptom when I had my clutch pressed in (5 speed manual transmission). Possibly a bad bearing. What did the transmission service entail?
