19mm Lug Nuts?

Hey everyone, so I don't really like keyed lug nuts. Just an issue waiting to happen. At the same time, I like the idea of converting to 19mm hex lug nuts since it is the most common size and I already have a much nicer breaker bar and such for 19mm. Anyways, a few questions:

What is the taper of the factory 09 Sport wheels?

What is the length of the studs/how deep do acorn nuts need to be to fit?

I have found these that appear to be decent options on Amazon:

Not sure on the length you need, but I’m most likely going to get some new hex ones in the spring for my Fuel wheels which have bolt on center caps. In my case, I can use open ended lugs since they don’t show anyway. When I bought them, I opted for spline drive nuts for added security, but they just turned into a major regret for me. I’ve split the thin walled socket twice already! Once, I believe was because the tire shop weakened it by using an impact gun, but the replacement was only used with a torque wrench, and split at only 90 ft-lbs! This is very problematic if you ever need to change a tire in an emergency and have the socket split! I just going to go old school with just hex nuts and a single standard lock. If I had open style wheels, like stock, I’d do what you’re trying to do. Sorry, I can’t help with the length, but I’m sure someone on here knows!

That right there is exactly why I am not even looking at the splined nuts.
 
Can't say for sure, but if you have the standard Toyota alloy wheels, then they use a shoulder type lug nut, not the acorn type. As for the size of the socket needed for the lug nuts, I would thing it much easier to just get one deep socket to fit the lugs you have, and keep it in the storage area for use when needed. Any 1/2 drive socket should fit the standard 1/2 drive breaker bar.

wait, those wheels use acorns, and not shank style lug nuts?

Good catch! I completely overlooked that he mentioning he had OEM Sport wheels, not aftermarkets.

In this case he would have to use the Mag Type lug nuts (everyone referring to as shank or shoulder) as the Toyota wheels do not have a taper in the wheel hole.
 
Thank you, everyone! Haven't had a reason to take 'em off yet, so I didn't realize they aren't tapered. I mean, I know I can get another socket and just toss it in, but I like the idea of having more universal toolsets so that I can help other people if need be.

Well, first you would have to find a complete set of new shoulder type lug nuts, that fit the Toyota studs, and have a 19mm socket head, which might be difficult. And even if you can find them, how much is it going to cost for a set of 24 new lug nuts against the cost of one deep 21mm socket.

Just saying...........:confused:

Good point, but some lugs come with a special deep socket that has the 19mm hex on it. We ordered a wheel/tire package from Tire Rack for our daughter’s Camry and it came with that special socket, which I’m assuming is because the bores for the lugs are smaller diameter, so they used a smaller hex, while using the deep socket to adapt to the wrench in the trunk in case of a flat. Something like that could be a good option for the OP.
 
I never realized that our trucks were supposed to have shouldered lug nuts. That would explain why I don’t have enough thread engagement on my front studs with my aftermarket Fuel wheels, which use conical seat nuts. I plan to remedy that this season by pressing longer studs into the hubs when I rebuild the front bearing assemblies.
 
I'm now in the same boat looking for 19mm hex lug nuts with a cone seat for my new aftermarket wheels. Looking into options from Motorsport Hardware (lots of friends used to run these on their race cars). That being said, similar to others, I do not want splined lug nuts because I had them on a previous car and when I lost the key I had to have one overnighted (for $80) to get the wheel off to make a repair while on a longer trip.


Trying to stay away from Amazon/eBay, not because they won't work, but because I'd like something a bit higher quality.

just buy some ET lug nuts. they are meant specifically for cases like yours. no need to mess with swapping studs.

I actually already have a 21mm socket as part of a set of large impact sockets. I just liked the idea of switching to 19mm if I was buying a set of nuts to get rid of the keyed nuts. I just don't want to have to deal with the extra hassle of messing with the key if I can help it.
