1gen 4runner 4wd problems

hello i have a 1986 4runner , 22re EFI , automatic
i locks the hubs , that is working
i put in H4 , it dont work
i put in L4 it works ???????

any though about it? heeeeeellllp

Are you sure the 4WD is functioning when you put it in four low? Or is it just the low range that's working?

Put the truck on four jackstands, front hubs locked, then start it and put it in gear and select four high. Does the front driveshaft spin? Then put it in four low. Does the front drive shaft spin?

With the front end off the ground and the hubs locked and the truck in 2wd, what happens when you pin one front wheel forward, does the other spin backward?

yeah i jackup the front
locked the front wheels , when i turn them i can see everything moving ,front drive shaft include
i also start the truck , put in l4 and i can see the front wheel moving , but not in H4

Ok, so in four high with the hubs locked the front shaft is spinning but the wheels aren't? Then you stick it in four low and the wheels spin? That makes no sense.

I think he is saying that when he spins the front wheels with the hubs locked the driveshaft spins. But when in 4H nothing but then 4L the turn from the tcase. My guess is that the cable for the transfer selector is out of adjustment and he really has 4H and is not getting into 4L. Now Ive never had an auto so I don't know how to adjust that cable but I would bet money that is what is going on. Sorry I can't be more help in fixing it.
