Maybe... I am in PA and have owned mine since new and I have very little surface rust on my frame and no body rust at all.

It's all in how you take care of it. After every snow I will pressure wash the underside and always keep a good wax on her.

Enthusiast will always take great care of their stuff, but most of the 4Runners on ebay and such will not be taken care of this well.

I would say no. My 90 with 170,000 miles has not 1 leak, oil, antifreeze, or any other fluids. My 96 Tacoma with 245,000 does not leak oil either and as far as I know doesn't leak anything else although I haven't checked it in awhile. Compare that to a Dodge Dakota at 135,000 miles I used to have which had oil leaking from every seal on the engine.

I would say that Toyotas are the most reliable vehicles on the road today. The general issue you have to look out for in these cars is rust. They just don't hold up as well as other vehicles with that issue.

The only other issue I have dealt with in more than 1 Toyota is the Power Steering pump going out. That's not really a big deal though.
 
Don't know if you've found one or not, but I had someone contact me that in arkansas that has a 1989 4Runner with 64000 miles. $4500 firm is what he quoted me. If you are interested I;ll get you his email.
 
$4500 is more then I was looking at....but if it only has 64k miles on it, might be worth a look. And I have family down there that could take a look at it for me. If you don't mind, please forward the email to [email protected]

Here is some info on the '89 4Runner with only 64K miles on it....

LET ME GIVE YOU A LITTLE HISTORY ON THIS TRUCK.
I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK 2 MONTHS AGO FROM A LOCAL GUY. HE BOUGHT IT NEW. BUT USED IT SELDOM AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE MILES. ABOUT 1 YEAR AGO IT WOULD NOT START WHEN HE TRIED. HE WAS HAVING HEALTH PROBLEMS AND JUST LEFT IT IN HIS CAR PORT. A FAMILY OF SQUIRRELS MADE A HOME UNDER THE HOOD. THEY CHEWED WIRES AND VAC HOSES I BOUGHT THE TRUCK AND STARTED REWIRING . SOME HAD TO BE REPLACED SOME JUST NEW ENDS. ALSO NEW VAC HOSES. ONCE THIS WAS DONE WE DISCOVER NO FUEL . WE DROPED THE TANK SINCE THE GAS WAS BAD . A NEW FUEL PUMP AND NEW GAS . STILL WOULD NOT START. NEXT WE DISCOVERED THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM . TIMING BELT JUMPED SOME TEETH. SO NEW BELT.
THEN IT STARTED RIGHT UP. AND RUNS GOOD.
THE ONLY ELETRICAL PROBLEM I HAVE FOUND IS REAR WINDOW IS INTERMITENT. I THINK IT THE MOTOR, BUT I WILL HAVE THIS FIXED IN A FEW DAYS.
I HAVE BEEN DRIVING EVERY DAY SINCE WE GOT IT RUNNING 400. MILES SO FAR.

hmmmm.....it does have some rust. It seems a bit high to me considering the shape of the body.

Guess I would be curious as to how it runs having the work done on it yet only having 64000 miles.

I don't know as I could give what he is asking, but that is just me.

Our these engines interference motors? When the timing belt slips, does the valves come in contact with the pistons? I know Toyota's 2JZ motors are not

And I do not think I could give what he is asking either. I don't know these SUVs very well, but that seems like a lot of rust to me.
 
These SUV's are infamous for rust, especially in certain regions where there is salt/chemicals applied to the snowy roads.

To answer your other question, yes when the timing belt slips the valves can come in contact with the pistons.

Try pulling the VIN # and calling toyota's customer service to see if the special service campaign has ever been done on the head gasket's as well (assuming this is a 3.0 V6).

The back window motor is also often a trouble spot. Going through the receipts of the previous owner of mine I see he has had to replace the regulator at least once.
 
Well guys, I made it home and found an '86 4 cyl turbo with 149k on it. Pretty clean inside and out. Little rust on the rear fender area and some oxidation on hood and roof. Inside is really clean and every thing works.

Here are the probs I saw:

Windows are a little slow to raise. Could this be the motors or just the tracks needing cleaned?

There is quite a bit of vibration in the steering column/wheel when stopped at a light with the truck still in gear.

After the test drive, when I was parking it, there was a grinding sound in the tyranny. This is an auto, so it's really weird. It would do it going from Park to Drive when the "shifter" would pass through the Neutral location. I have no clue what this is. The truck was on a kind of steep drive way. How do these trannies hold up? Could this be just low fluid or major tranny issues?
