1st gear / transmission issue?

I will readily admit my knowledge of such things is limited, but here it goes.

I recently purchased a 95 4Runner with the 22RE engine and 82K. The vehicle is in very nice shape and is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. Despite being underpowered, this vehicle will suit me fine considering it will be mostly used as a second car -- primarily as a rig to get me back and forth from the trailhead.

The problem I found is in 1st gear at a stop. As I depress the clutch, I occasionally notice a vibration and a higher-pitched noise (almost a loud squeak). This is especially prevalent when as I begin to move uphill after being stopped on a steep grade. The vibration lasts only a couple of seconds and everything after that is fine. The vehicle works normally. The sound will occasionally occur when on flat ground, but I would say 95 percent of the time it doesn't happen under those conditions. It almost always happens on a steep hill.

Does anyone have any ideas to the root cause of this problem or how it can be solved? I don't think it is normal. Perhaps I am doing something wrong, but none of my other manual transmission automobiles ever experienced a similar problem....

Thanks in advance for all of your help!
