1st Gen 4Runner....Question on 4WD indicator light

Guys,

I am new to this forum because I just aquired my first ever Toyota. It is a 88 4Runner. My question is, where is the 4WD indicator light? Is it in the dash cluster, or where the shifters are? I haven't had the chance to test the 4WD if it is engaging. I did put it in 4H and 4L but didnt notice any new light turn on. Do I need to lock the hubs for the light to turn on?

Any help would be truly appreciated. I am not new to the offroad scene but I have no knowledge of Toyota's. I am sure I will be a frequent visitor here with questions on my newly acquired toy.

passenger side of your gauge cluster. If you shine a flashlight in there you could probably see it. Hubs dont affect it.

Thank you...I still can't see it even if I flash a flashlight to it but I'll take your word for it. I guess it is not engaging into 4x4. I wonder if it has an actuator on the front diff. Can anyone help me out on that. If it does, is it an electric or vacuum type actuator?

You said it's an 88, so there is no actuator on the front diff.
The light is controlled by a switch on the t-case. You could have a wiring problem, or more likely a bad bulb.

Thanks Fourwd1 but even if it is IFS, it still doesnt have an actuator. I would assumed that all IFS front diff's would have an actuator.

So if it doesn't then it might be a sensor like you said or the 4wd indicator lightbulb is out. Hopefully I will have some time this weekend to check the 4x4 on it.
