Hello,
Need some help with a idling and stalling issue. This morning while on my way to an interview, my truck started idling rough and stalled while waiting to turn onto the highway. I started the truck back up and took off. It runs just fine under acceleration, or if I hold the throttle down just a bit but if I let off it starts to idle really rough and bog down then it just dies. Also sometimes I can here a relay down by the computer clicking. I checked the MAF connection, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and also replaced the air filter and it all checks out fine. I thought about it possibly being a vacuum leak, but cant hear any. Also when its idling rough like this its running very very rich. If any one has any advice or can help, it will be very much appreciated!!

Thanks in advanced,
Wade

Might sound stupid its so simple, but check the rubber boot that goes from the throttle body into the intake tube. Those dry out and crack, causing the exact issue your having. When i say check it, i mean take it off completly and inspect it. Are you having any codes flash? Its really easy to check codes it has thrown, many threads on the subject

Well my intake tube cracked a long time ago, at the time I just wrapped some duct tape around it because I couldn't find one in a junkyard anywhere. It never gave me any problems. Today I was under the hood trying to figure it out, I unplugged the TPS and nothing changed. Then I unplugged the wire from the MAF sensor and the idle smoothed out and it ran fine. So with a quick call to my girlfriends step-father I ran down both a MAF and a intake tube that just came in on a 87 Pick Up. Gonna go pull the parts Saturday and slap em on to see if it fixes my problem. I also tried the ole "spray starting fluid around the vacuum lines to find a leak" thing and it did nothing.. dont know if I was doing it wrong or if this method actually works ( im leaning towards the latter ). Anywho, Ill get the MAF and intake tube saturday and update everyone. Oh and the truck im getting the parts off of also has a recently rebuilt 5-speed tranny that im gonna get my hands on for a few hundred bucks ( the previous owner on my truck tightened the fill plug to tight and cracked the housing ).

And as for codes, its not throwing any...that i know of. I think my CEL light might be burned out. When I rebuilt my motor it never came on when I jumped the wire under the hood to set the timing. Almost forgot, I'm also gonna yank the cold start injector off this donor truck Saturday and hopefully fix my sometimes hard starting issue.

That's what it sounds like, it should also come on and stay on for a couple of seconds when you start it up.

Just thought I would update everyone. Replaced the MAF and intake tube today, fixed her right up. Also did a valve adjustment and new valve cover gaskets along with some seafoam. It had never run any better! I still have a lot of engine noise though, it sounds like a little baby diesel. I figured the valve adjustment would quite her down a bit, but it didnt. I know these are noisy motors, but it just seems a little excessive..any thoughts?

Valves on the 22RE are a PITA, I've still haven't gotten the knack of quieting them down. I have the best luck when I do them hot like the FSM says, but it's hard to get to them all before they cool down, and then your numbers are off because you did half of them "hot" and half of them "warm" and the last one "cold". Pain In The Ass, I say.

Do make sure that the chuckling that sounds like a diesel isn't your timing chain, though. Timing chain slap can sound like that too.

How would I check the timing chain? When I had the valve cover off yesterday I took a quick look at the chain and it appeared to be in fine condition. It's fairly new too. Got replaced when I rebuilt about 18k ago.

You can check the guides if you shine a light down the inside of the timing cover with the valve cover off. The chain and guides are probably fine if you just replaced them recently.
