I purchased an '86 Runner 5spd about a week ago and I was wondering if anyone had any advice about parts to look at that may need replacing right away or anything i should do right away besides getting the fluids changed as the vehicle had sat for the last 2 years and had only been driven the last month before the previous owner sold it. Any and all advice would help tons.

Thanks!

I'd start by replacing all the fluids in the vehicle, especially since it's been sitting for 2 yrs.
And by all fluids I mean:
engine oil
t-case gear oil
coolant (flush)
brake fluid (flush the lines)
then the gear oil in both diffs

and just as (or more) important, check the Timing Chain. Chances are it needs replacing.

im doing the oil and coolant tomorrow, how complicated is it to do the transfer case and differential oil? Also I should have mentioned this in the first place, its a 5spd so if there is anything further info pertaining to that, that would be much appreciated

check the clutch master for contamination and flush if necessary maybe also grease the suspension at the appropriate grease locations...

Yeah, I forgot the transmission and the clutch MC, flush it too. And even the PS system.

The trans and t-case are easy to drain, but just a little hard to fill (the check/fill plugs are on the side.) One trick I use is to remove the shifters and fill thru there untill I see it start to dribble out the check hole.

Sorry im not familiar with the abbrv. could you elaborate a little more please?
also i have no owners manual so if anyone has a e version that would be great

The clutch master cylinder on the firewall ,you'll have to drain it at the slave cylinder on the side of the transmission.PS system, power steering .Mine also sat for a while,My injectors got clogged.I changed the fuel filter for now and plan on sealing the tank this summer if it doesn't clog the injectors again before then.

I recommend you go ahead and buy a power steering tension pulley bearing.
The bearing on my 87 seized after it had sat up only a couple of months recently. If yours has A/C, that tension pulley is suspect as well. I'd also consider replacing all belts. Tires may be dry-rotted...be careful. After you get it back on the road, park it on a dry spot and check for leaks of any kind.

mine has no AC, and it is leaking a little gas and that is getting looked into today, tires are alright (none of them match) but the prev owner bought 4 used tires with decent tread for it. hopefully nothing else is leaking, we have zero dry spots in town right now, and we are expecting anywhere from 6-20in of snow from tomorrow to saturday
