1st gen rear speaker options

Hey, so I am looking to replace my old, stock (or whatever I have behind there) rear speakers for my latest 4runner, 1987.

I'm thinking of going with a pair or 6.5" 2 way speakers and getting some 4" mids and tweets for up front. I have some kind of newish Pioneer player with a supposed 125W per channel output. I am not wanting to get an amp or boost massive bass but I am hoping for some decent sound. Currently the system sounds pretty bad, I'm sure better speakers will open it up some for me.

Has anyone come up with any ideas for mounting decent speakers in the stock rear location? I'm all for building a small box enclosure, and making sure that things don't rattle around while still maintaining the bone stock look.

you dont really need to build boxes car speakers are typically designed as free air (other than subs) so they dont require an enclosure I just installed some 6x9's in the rear location was easy peazy I just removed the old speakers theyre an odd looking creature they seem to have built in amplifiers and the tweeter is seperate from the mid mine were pooched yours probably are too (note : if you have holes in your rear wheel wells your speakers are gonna get muddy lol) I also removed the mounting plate there( you may be able to use this plate if modified and depending on the size of speaker you will be using. I then used metal strapping (the stuff you use to hang pipes from ceilings) drilled some tap holes screwed in the strapping and mounted the speakers to that cut opening in the panels mounted the grills and so on...hope this helps! oh ps. if u want it to sound any good your gonna have to get an amp just geta cheap 4 channel of craigslist Im using deck power it sounds like shit!

o ya almost forgot careful when you hook up the rears if yopur using the stock wiring as there also is some wiring for the built in amp in each speaker so each side has 3 or 4 wires sorry cant remember but theres + - and some amp wires in there

I just installed a set of 6 x 9 Pioneers in the back and a set of Memphis audio 4” components with a separate cross overs up front
There was a set of panels made out of MDF for 6 x 9s already in the truck when I bought it. I just installed the new Pioneers into the panels already there. I did not modify the factory interior panels they still have the 4.5” speaker opening, the new 6 x 9 sits back away from the 4” opening about one and half inches giving the new 6 x 9 plenty of room to project sound.
I also used all new 18 gauge wire for the new speakers

I have a Sony head unit in the truck that with the new speakers sounds very, very good. I plan to install a new Kenwood 7” DVD Navigation system soon.....Stand by for pics when all is installed

A previous owner had put 5 1/4" in the doors, which I swapped for a 5 1/4 component speaker. I put the tweeters in the factory speaker spots in the dash. I also have 6x9s in the rear and a 10" bandpass sub. I've discovered that I need to go with an external amp to get good sound.

Thanks for all the tips, I checked my rear speakers and I do have that funky stock thing that looks like an amp. The wiring is pretty simple, but I can see how someone could confuse the wiring for the speakers and the grounds back there.

Looks like the plan is going to be installing some 6x9's(what I was hoping to go with from the start) with either some strapping or .060" aluminum sheeting that I can cut into brackets.
