Has anyone done this mod beside Dirtco?

I read through his thread but it doesn't say where he got his roll bar.

I would like to buy/find a first gen roll bar for my cargo area. I know that SS sells one for ~ $250 but they are in AZ and I am in San Diego, CA.

So I was wondering if anyone has obtained one of these from a junkyard or through some other method.

i think its a sweet mod unfortunately i need the cargo space more then i need that roll cage in there. If anyone is interested, PM me i have a cage for sale.

Thats not a "roll cage" as much as a glorified shelving rack.

Installing the 1st Gen roll bar is pretty easy, but I’ll give you the quick run down.

First, I wouldn’t bother buying the roll bar from Sonoran Steel. You should be able to find one at a junk yard for cheap, or you could post a “Want to Buy” ad on the local 4x4 forums. There’s a couple guys selling them around here for $20 - $50.

You have to cut down the front legs because the wheel wells are taller on the 3rd gen 4Runners. The measurements are in the above link. Most people reuse the stock plates but I used a couple larger and stronger base plates that have four mounting holes instead of two.

I also had a hard time getting it in and out of the 4Runner without scratching the crap out of the interior, so I installed an I.D. inner locking tube clamp. This let me install it in the back of the 4Runner in two sections and the roll bar padding hides the clamp.

Once you get it in the 4Runner center the roll bar and mark your holes. You will want to center punch them through the carpet, then pull the carpet back and drill your holes. If you drill through the carpet the drill bit will catch the padding and wrap it up on the drill bit, screwing up your carpet. Then you can bolt it in place using backing plates or large fender washers on the underside of the body. That brings up a very important subject: while the roll bar looks cool and makes for a good place to mount stuff, it’s not going to do much in an actual roll over. The roll bar itself is 2” .120 wall seamless tubing, which is good, but where it mounts on the floor is single wall thin sheet metal with no bracing around it. In a moderate to hard roll over the roll bar will punch through the floor.

If I didn't need my cargo space, I'd definately want one in mine! Dirtco has the best setup I've ever seen.....by far!

Dirtco's no doubt set up nicely, can't say I'm not inspired by the idea of incorporating a shelving unit as well...maybe even a drawer system perhaps...

I also got my roll bar in one piece thru the driver's side rr door with a bit of finagling. Just pull the front seats forward and remove the headrests....oh yeah rear seats folded flat.

Ofcourse that's when everything was cut, welded and ready to be bolted on. Got mine for $40 off a guy on Craigslist.

Definitely do NOT pay $250 for one of these. There was one on C-List here in ABQ for weeks selling for $20. I thought about it, but decided that ultimately it didn't suit my needs. Just keep your eyes peeled and you'll find a deal on one.

Well looks like Dirtco took care of my response to this already!

I hope you find one, it is a fun modification that I find to be quite useful as well.

Thanks man! I really like how it turned out and how easy it is to get to all of my gear.

I also got my roll bar in one piece thru the driver's side rr door with a bit of finagling. Just pull the front seats forward and remove the headrests....oh yeah rear seats folded flat.

I got the roll bar from a buddy and it had the CO2 mount welded in place, I think that was causing most of the problems getting it inside the 4Runner. The bracket stuck out another 8"-10" past the edge of the roll bar.

I love the nay sayers talking about how they need the cargo space, when dirtco's install clearly demonstrates how it can provide more storage with the use of a shelf. Also before I installed mine I hardly used the space on top of the wheel wells and the couple inches behind them that the rear legs occupy. It has provided me a space to mount my CO2 bottle more out of the way, my fire extinguishers and left the cargo area for anything I need.

i have my bar sitting in my garage(where it has been for the past 8months) i need to get on this, dirtco's shelf is BA, and im gonna look into makeing one. im also gonna built a drawer system as well with two slider drawers. though ill have to see how all this will work with the dog back there.

I really like what you did with that bar and shelf. I was never really a fan of having the 1st Gen back there when I first saw it years ago but the mods you've done has me reconsidering.

I've got to go back to a local wrecker again, and there was one of these with the padding in a 1st gen. I might see if I can grab it, not sure if I'd use it though. Looks cool, but the dog's back there, I like that you can mount stuff to it though. Some really cool ideas in this thread!

The $250 was for many things, going to the junk yard and pulling it, modifying it, base plates with hardware and shipping the HUGE thing to you. That being said, I have not had one here since 2005 or 2006, so we have not had a roll bar transaction since 2006, I tell people to find one locally and modify it.

It is not an active product. I was the first one I know of to install one in a 3rd gen back in 2003. You don't have to cut the bar, put it in through the back doors not the hatch.

I would also chisel off the factory plates and re-use them so it was identical just shorter front legs.

I have a bar for Lances old 2001 but have not installed it.
