Yeah, his family is pretty affluent, they've got good insurance. The outcome will either be full repair with paid rental car, or she'll be totaled. We'll see.

To make it worse, he drives a Toyota, making this Toyota sex. More specifically, he drives a solid axle swapped '93 runner on 35's. And I'm happy his stinger bumper wasn't on at the time.

It is also that massive panel behind the door, but that's all.

He said that the place their insurance uses is Ken Garff, which is a dealership. I was thinkin that a dealership wouldn't be interested in expensive repairs to a 26 year old truck, and might write it off.

You can take it anywhere you want, you don't have to use his insurance's shop. Although depending on the extent of the damage, you might come out ahead if they total it - cash out, buy it back, and fix it yourself for less than what they paid you...

If they total it I plan to buy it back. The NADA on this truck is $4000avg, $5000 high. That would be plenty of money to fix it and then some. My buddy owns a toyota shop, and we could fix it fairly cheap. New door and front panel at the junkyard, some sort of repair on the rear section.

When I say the rear panel, i'm talking about that massive sheet of metal from behind the door to the taillight. With the gas flap on it.

Got called back today. Declared a total loss. Offer is a whopping $1850..

If anyone's got tips on squeezing them for a higher offer, or a guess at what a typical buyback price is, I'd love to hear it.

No idea what the buyback would be, but your truck is worth more than that. You're going to have to do some legwork to prove it though, start collecting KSL and Craigslist ads.

Insurance is such a scam.

Here's my '86 I recently acquired. All original paint except for the trim around the rear, side windows I recently repainted. I restored most of the plastic trim (which was mostly faded) and will be correcting/polishing the paint in the next few weeks (just need to order some decon chemicals I want to use on this project and some more buffer pads). I'm also working a couple of relatively minor mechanical issues as I get time.

My original intent was to detail it, fix the minor issues and then sell it. .....giving the money from the sale to my Dad who was the original owner. However, now that I've had it for a couple of weeks, I don't have the heart to give it up considering how well he kept it up. I may end up keeping it for a while.
